What is an intervention?
Intervention is a loving, respectful and united confrontation made by family members, employers, co-workers and caring friends working to save the life of a person abusing alcohol or drugs or engaging in compulsive and self-destructive behaviors of sex, eating disorders, gambling, work, etc. An intervention is the beginning of the healing process for the individual and for the family and friends.
It is the first step toward recovery and rebuilding families, careers, health and happiness.
How do I/we prepare for an intervention?
An intervention can be highly effective, but it can also be a very stressful and emotionally intense event. Preparation for an intervention is most important and often determines success or failure. Once the decision to intervene has been made, it is essential to thoroughly plan and prepare for the event. The interventionist will guide you through the planning and preparatory process and will, of course, be present during the intervention. The primary goal of the intervention is to have the person accept the professional help that is being offered and agree to enter treatment at the conclusion of the intervention.
The Intervention Process
It all begins with the first phone call:
Staff are trained to take the first call to assess what the caller needs. The intervention process is briefly explained along with the fee schedule and if the caller agrees then an intake/assessment appointment with the interventionist is scheduled.
Intake/Assessment
The purpose of the intake/assessment session is to gather data, determine whether or not intervention is appropriate, choose a team, formulate the plan if Intervention is not indicated when there is a possibility of homicide, suicide, psychiatric complications, or medical emergencies. Issues of violence, sexual abuse, mental illness, and ability to formulate a team must be considered.
Intervention Education Sessions
focus on the disease concept
focus on enabling
focus on family involvement and roles
help members determine new behaviors
Intervention education sessions usually involve three sessions taking place over one to three weeks. Two-hour segments allow for assimilation of new information and personal insights. The session can be conducted in one day, but spacing classes is ideal, because it allows time for integrating information into new ways of functioning.
Staging and Practice for the Intervention
Empowering the family involves letting them handle responsibilities for all decisions, plans, phone calls, and other arrangements. Have participants in the intervention:
- agree on positions and new behaviors which stop enabling
- prepare a written script
- role play and plan the intervention
The Intervention Meeting
The session is fully planned. The role of the interventionist is minimal because the family has been fully prepared to handle the session.
- Participants stick to the script.
- The session is usually brief.
- Family members will practice detachment and have bottom line behaviors that offer consequences
Post intervention
- Brings closure to the intervention process.
- Addresses any issues which may have come up.
- Validates the need for family treatment.
- Prepares the family for continuing treatment and makes any appropriate referral contacts
- Allows participants to discuss their own feelings and gain support from the counselor.
- Prepares everyone for the anger and feelings which are a normal part of the intervention
